India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024 is being jointly organized by the Department of Telecommunication and The Cellular Operators Association of India from 15th October to 18th October in Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
The 3-day long eighth edition of Asia’s one of the most prominent technology expo was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. He also inaugurated the International Telecommunication Union- World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly 2024. It was attended by people from Union Minister for Communication Shri Jyotiradiya Scindia, Minister of State for Communication Shri Chandrasekhar Pemmasani, Secretary General of ITU Ms Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Ministers & dignitaries of various foreign countries, industry leaders, telecom experts, youths from the Startup. The assembly recorded the highest ever turnout with 3,200 delegates from 160 countries.
The International Telecommunication Union is the governing body of the standardization work of the International Telecommunication Union.
While Inaugurating the WTSA PM Modi bolsted that India holds the potential to be a global leader in Telecommunication with 120 crore mobile users and 95 crore internet users. In the last 10 years, India has laid optical fibres which is eight times the distance between the earth and moon. India has already taken steps towards 6G technology.
Prime Minister Modi and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia took a walkthrough of the exhibition.
“Mobile connections in India have risen from 904 million to 1.16 billion today. Broadband connectivity in India is a staggering 924 million users. OFC fibre in India was only 11 million route kilometres, today it is 41 million route kilometres. These numbers of growth are accompanied by a digital payment system, the UPI interface, and 4G stack,” said Scindia.
Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani, Sunil Bharati Mittal, Chairman of Bharati Airtel, and Kumar Mangalam Birla of Vodafone Idea also addressed the gathering. Akash Ambani suggested Indian Government expedite the updating of the 2020 draft of the data centre policy. Indian data should remain in India. Bharati Mittal lauded the government’s initiative to open up the space industry to the private sector. Kumar Mangalam Birla of Vodafone emphasized the need to combat spam and phishing activity with help from the regulatory body.
