The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has approved more than 1.4 lakh projects under its core schemes—PMKSY, PLISFPI, and PMFME—to improve food processing infrastructure and boost economic growth, particularly in rural regions. This effort is a crucial step toward realizing Viksit Bharat's aim of increasing processing capacity, lowering post-harvest losses, and creating job opportunities.
To improve food processing infrastructure and align with the vision of Viksit Bharat, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has been incentivizing the establishment/expansion of related infrastructure through its two Central Sector Schemes, Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY) and Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI), as well as a Centrally sponsored Pradhan Mantri Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) across the country.

Under PMKSY, MoFPI has approved 1134 food processing projects, including 41 Mega Food Parks and 395 Cold Chain projects, across the country till June 30, 2025. Under the PMFME Scheme, MoFPI has accepted 144517 applications around the country until June 30, 2025. Under PLISFPI, MoFPI has accepted 170 initiatives around the country till June 30, 2025.
MoFPI's schemes aim to increase preservation and processing capacities, reduce post-harvest losses, develop value-added products, introduce innovative technologies, improve productivity and efficiency in food processing, foster entrepreneurship, provide job opportunities, and skill development, all of which boost economies and contribute to the country's inclusive growth.

Under these schemes, MoFPI provides financial help for the establishment of food processing infrastructure throughout the country, including Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. The majority of the MoFPI-approved projects are in rural areas, which benefits local farmers. MoFPI has approved 261 proposals under the PMFME Scheme in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, until June 30, 2025. The Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh has been designated as a Banana Cluster under PMKSY's Operation Greens component plan, and Banana has also been designated as One District One Product (ODOP) under the PMFME plan.
MoFPI provides financial assistance in the form of grants-in-aid/subsidies for the establishment of food processing projects, resulting in both processing and preservation infrastructure facilities. The processing facilities established under PMKSY's component programs provide value to raw farm produce, resulting in better prices. Similarly, temperature-controlled transport, cold storage/frozen storage/controlled environment storage, and irradiation facilities facilitate the transit of raw and finished products, minimizing post-harvest losses of farm produce and extending shelf life. These strategies help farmers get higher profits while simultaneously offering job opportunities.
The Ministry of Food Processing is implementing PLISFPI to help create global food manufacturing champions and promote Indian food brands in the worldwide market. The program will be implemented over a six-year period, from 2021-22 to 2026-27, with an expense of Rs.10,900 crore.
With the goal of increasing investments and sourcing of Indian food products, the MoFPI organized three editions of World Food India (WFI) in 2017, 2023, and 2024, which serve as a premier platform to highlight investment opportunities and advancements in food processing while facilitating their integration into domestic and international markets. The event brings together global food processing firms, innovators, supply chain stakeholders, equipment makers, and others on a collaborative platform, presenting foreign enterprises with tie-up/business options with its Indian counterparts.
